The Nigerian Defence Academy will be used as a case study to dissect its impact on its ‘products’ and what they have become in the past years.

Brief History Of Nigeria Defence Academy

The Nigerian Defence Academy is a military educational institution where its successful candidates spend 5 years; 4 years for academic research and an additional year for military training. This academy is regarded as one of the best in Africa in terms of military occupation.

In this article, we shall be looking at 5 notable Nigerian Defence Academy alumni.


  1. Oladipo Diya

Diya is a retired Lieutenant General in the Nigerian Army whose years of active military services were from 1964-1997. He was born on the 3rd of April 1944 in Odogbolu, Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area of Ogun State. From January 1984 – August 1985, he was the governor of Ogun state. He was also a Chief of Defence staff from 1993-1997.

  1. Azubuike Ihejirika

Iherijika is another notable alumnus of the Nigerian Defence Academy. He was born on February 13, 1956, in Abia state. He served as Principal Staff Officer at the Defence and Army Headquarters from 2010-2014. He was made chief of army staff under former President Goodluck Jonathan from September 8, 2010. This position he held for four years till he retired in January 2014. Upon retirement, Iherjirika was given the title “Dike Abia”, which is acknowledged as the highest honour in Igbo land.

3. Victor Malu

Born Victor Samuel Leonard Malu on the 15th of January 1947 at Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue state, Malu was chief of Army Staff from May 1999 to April 2001. Before he retired, he was made a Lieutenant General.  The tribunal that tried General Oladipo Diya was supervised by Victor Malu in 1997. This tribunal was created to try officers who attempted to overthrow Gen. Sani Abacha. He died on the 9th of October 2017 at the age of 70.

  1. Sambo Dasuki

Dasuki was born on the 2nd of December 1964 in Kaduna where the NDA has its headquarters. He is a product of the Nigerian Defence Academy. He was appointed as the National Security Adviser to Nigeria,s former president, Goodluck Jonathan from 2012-2015. Dasuki’s appointed came after General Owoye Andrew Azazi was sacked. Sambo Dasuki retired as a Nigerian Army Colonel.


  1. Muhammadu Buhari

It is quite interesting to note that Nigeria’s 15th and current president has a diploma from NDA. President Buhari’s political career began in the army. After the NDA, Buhari went to England where he studied at a cadet school. In 1963, he served as lieutenant and commanded a platoon in Abeokuta. He was also a brigadier major. Afterwards, Buhari started his long and onerous career in politics.
